Seniors

The Long Beach Public Library offers the following programs and services to enhance the lives of seniors in our community.

Books in Different Format

  • Large Print books - fiction and non-fiction.
  • Media - books on tape and CD, Braille tapes, music CD's, movies (DVD's and VHS).
  • Genealogy reference books located at the Main Library.

Book Clubs

  • Available at most Long Beach Public Libraries - a new book club has just started at the El Dorado Senior Center specifically for seniors.

Homebound Readers Services

  • The Homebound Readers Services program provides customized library materials to homebound customers living in Long Beach.  The service is specifically designed for those who are confined to their homes by an illness or an injury, either chronic or or temporary.  This service is initiated by a phone call to the Homebound Readers Service at (562) 570-6959, Tuesdays - Saturdays, 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  Regular or large print books, CD's videos, DVD's books on tape, magazines, and Braille tapes are selected for each homebound reader and mailed out every other week at no charge.  It is like a personal librarian at your service to assist you with your reading needs.

Books on Wheels Program

  • Books on Wheels Program - dinner and a book or dinner and a movie delivered to homebound readers enrolled in the Meals on Wheels program  Call (562) 570-6959 for initiating the Books on Wheels Program.

Technology

  • Free basic and intermediate computer classes on how to search the Internet and library catalog.
  • One hour of free computer access at the Main Library and 30 minutes at neighborhood libraries daily.
  • ASKNOW 24/7 Reference Service - get your questions answered 24/7 via interactive chat reference form the Long Beach Public Library's website at www.lbpl.org
  • Electronic databases - available from the library's website. For example: Heritage Quest, a unique, growing collection of research materials for tracing family history and American culture.

Tours

  • Individual or group tours provided upon request.

Speakers Bureau

  • Speakers Bureau - librarians will speak on topics of interest to seniors.

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Volunteer opportunities available at all Long Beach Public Libraries. Stop by any of the Long Beach Public Libraries and fill out an application form.
