Friends of the Long Beach Public Library

The Friends of the Long Beach Public Library is a volunteer, nonprofit organization advocating a strong public library system and actively supporting the Long Beach Public Library. Among the goals of the Friends are to:

  • Increase community awareness of the resources, services and needs of the Long Beach Public Library.

  • Sponsor special children's programs in the libraries, including the summer reading program.

  • Participate in adult programs and special events.

  • Add to the library's special collections through the Friends Memorial Book Program.

  • Ensure that the vital concept of a free and accessible public library system remains alive in Long Beach.

The Friends of the Long Beach Public Library group was formed in 1962 with the goals of preserving the freedom of the library and preventing censorship. There had been several attempts to ban books from the library, and the library administration, assisted by the new Friends group, was able to resist the censorship attempt. The Friends later endorsed the building of a new library to replace the aging Main library; the new Main library opened in 1977, at its present location in the Civic Center.

There is a Junior Friends of the Library Group, which creates an opportunity for young people to support their library.

An annual meeting of the membership is held in the spring each year at which business is conducted and officers are elected. The affairs of the Friends are managed and directed by the Executive Board, which welcomes suggestions from the membership.
